Detailed description

This is an experimental CTF map designed to use the avocado palette for a cartoonish effect. It is still under development, but I would like some user's input on various aspects of the map. The Readme included in the download has additional information. I will take all reasonable suggestions or criticism into account for future releases.

The map is set on two castles in the middle of a lava field. Players must navigate a number of "islands" in order to reach their opponent's flag. The two sides are almost mirror images of each other so neither team has an advantage.

For the correct texture configuration, please make sure you have the latest aard/boxtex/alt_package.cfg installed. It can be found in Avacado by Tentus:

Thanks for looking at my map, please provide feedback so I can improve this map further.

New for beta 4:
-added simple pixelated cloudbox for horizon
-added simple cloudlayer for star twinkling effect
-added mapmodelreset to support future custom map models
-added background sounds
-reduced health numbers on side islands
-reworked noclip/clip to make them more efficient
-deleted extra geometry
-tried making lights more orange again (now too pink???)
-various other fixes/optimizations

this is a good idea, and by that i mean the layout. I like that you can take a direct path or since you get rifles in the start you can use them to take a detour around the whole map for a secret attack.. However the blocks don't help the theme since you didn't even use the guacamole textures. You used the default ones.. Ohh right you said I should make my own .cfg file for this? That should be included in the zip because... People shouldn't have to add their own content to your work to make it work properly, you should take care of it all :P

Nevertheless I don't know about the pure blocks used in something like this. If you don't jump perfectly you can't rely on a slanted edge so you'll just fall into the lava which can get really annoying.

Actually, I used the avocado texture .cfg because it is more complete than the guacamole one. I only ask users to download one additional file and place the .cfg in the correct folder. (if the map is using the default sauerbraten textures than you did something wrong)

This additional download will always contain the most up to date version of the texture .cfg, and I do not want an older version included with my map to overright the newest version.

The cartoon theme of this map is one thing I defiantly will not change. It is an experiment to test the application of the avocado texture .cfg (changing the theme would defeat the entire purpose of the map) and I do not want to create another "realistic" looking dark and gloomy map. Try turning on sobel or bloom to make the lava more cartoonish.

I like the style of this map, you've used the textures to great effect in a way I never thought I would see them, so I made this for you: lavatn.jpg

I agree that the "realistic" lava texture needs to go, but your texture is a bit too "soft" for this map's style. I have created a more pixelated lava texture that I think fits better with the map's blocky/cartoon style. It is included in this latest release. I am not entirely pleased with it, but with sobel enabled I think it looks pretty good.

I love your map. I was also a bit confused at first because I got the default textures but once I installed the avocado ones, I thought "Wow looks cool!"

I love the concept and no you shouldn't believe anyone who tells you to do one more "realistic looking dark and gloomy map". I think you made a good use of the texture, I really like it.

One stuff is that the lava is the only "realistic" texture you have in there and I thought it wasn't cartoonist enough. Hopefully Quin's texture will help.

Gameplay: I like the fact there are different paths and that we can rocket-jump on the "walls" surrounding the map. Also, I love the jumppad in the middle with the quad. It's really cool.

However, there is one stuff that annoys me regarding the "islands" that come out of the lava and on which we are jumping to cross the map. Some parts of these islands are clipped (the bottom of them) and there is no way to see which blocks are and which one aren't. Of course, as super good players we all are, we are supposed to jump on top of the island but that's not always the case. I sometimes felt a bit cheated when I thought I was going to land on a solid block and ended up in lava. So, I suggest that either you remove the clips... or that you slightly change the color of the texture of the blocks that are clipped (e.g. ligher or darker grey) so that people know where they are going. I hope what I'm saying make sense. :-)

Overall I think it's a great map and I would be happy to play it. I give you a 5. Actually, I was going to give you a 4 because of the clipped blocks and of the lava texture (and because I'm a f**** perfectionist even thought I'm not able to map myself...) but since you want to improve the map further, I know the end product will be excellent.

I really enjoyed your map, especially the bit in the center (great detail work!). I am actually quite taken with the "cartoon doom" style, I think it's pure awesome.
